Workshop Video Lectures - Week One

These are the lectures that I give during the first week of my live workshops. In this series of lectures, I introduce you to the key concepts of Visual Music & Poetry - the two essential components of all fine art. I also cover the critical topic of notan which is the foundation for the design in every painting, and how to learn values, the one thing that will help you more than anything else make things look real. These are downloadable video files for those of you who would like to take a workshop, but who cannot travel to the workshop location.

Video Lecture 1 - Visual Poetry & Music

This is the first lecture in the series in which I talk about the concept of "Visual Music and Poetry". Intermediate and advanced students will also find this lecture invaluable if they have not heard of the concept before. This is probably the most important thing you will learn in painting to make your work meaningful, and to have an impact on people. In this lecture I explain each of the four components of the Visual Music and Poetry Model and why each of them is critical to your work.

I always do this lecture on day one of the workshop to give everyone a broad overview of the things they will be working on during the week. This is also important as the framework for understanding the complete Virtual Art Academy program.

Video Lecture 2 - What are values?

The second lecture in the workshop explains exactly what values are. You need to understand this concept thoroughly because it is fundamental to the art of painting and making your paintings look real. If you get the values approximately correct in your paintings, your paintings will look real, no matter what the color is. In fact when most students say they have a color problem, 90% of the time it is a value problem.

You also need this information to fully understand the concept of Notan which is the topic of a later lecture.

Length of video: 5 minutes

Video Lecture 3 - How to create a five-value scale

The five-value scale is the most important color scale you will learn in your artistic career. It is the basis for creating the value pattern in your paintings and giving you a strong foundation from which you can develop your painting. It is surprisingly difficult to do. This video shows you how (for oil and acrylic painters only).

Length of video: 5 minutes

Video Lecture 4 - How to compare values

You can compare values in pairs in order to determine the remainder. This is a critical skill to master. Using this technique you can assign values to all the major shapes in your painting.

Length of video: 10 minutes

Video Lecture 5 - What is notan?

This lecture in the series will introduce you to the concept of Notan. This is the dark light harmony in your painting which is essential to making your abstract design interesting. This is a very powerful concept to understand, but when you master it, even a painting done with two or three ink pens can look beautiful.

Length of video: 5 minutes

Video Lecture 6 - How to create a mass notan

There is one technique that you can do in one or two minutes, that will tell you if the painting you are going to work on for the next two hours is going to work or not. This is called a mass notan. This is also a great way to make little paintings when you are traveling, and to capture the essence of a design. In this lecture I show you exactly how I create these little jewels!

Length of video: 5 minutes

Video Lecture 7 - Cautions: Creating a mass notan

There are many tips and tricks to creating mass notans that will save you a lot of time. In this lecture I will go over a lot of the common problems that students have when doing these studies, and how to avoid them. This will drastically shorten the time it takes you to do these studies, giving you more time for creative thinking (or an extra cup of coffee!).

Length of video: 10 minutes

Video Lecture 8 - How to crop a view

Cropping helps you simplify a scene in front of you and can help you find an interesting composition you might otherwise miss. This is an invaluable technique for helping your sense of design and composition.

Length of video: 5 minutes

Video Lecture 9 - Unequal space division

Space division is how you break up the painting into shapes of different colors or different values. Good space division is one of the most important things you need to do in order to create an interesting design and create music in your painting.

Length of video: 14 minutes

Video Lecture 10 - Dominant values

A very important part of how you make your painting interesting, is how you divide up the light, dark and gray areas in your painting. This is what creates an interesting notan structure. One of the most important principles you need to understand is the idea of a dominant value.

This concludes the series of ten lectures that I usually give in my one week workshops. With the skills in these lectures, you will already see a significant improvement in your work. Do not forget however that you will need to practice each of these skills over and over again. I would suggest that each week for the next ten weeks you concentrate on just one of these lectures and practice the assignment.

Length of video: 15 minutes

What do I need to view them?

The videos are in Flash (FLV) video format so you can watch them on your computer.

  • If you have a Windows computer you will need RealPlayer or VLC Player to view the videos.
  • If you are on a Mac you will need RealPlayer for the Mac. Make sure you have the latest version of whichever software you are using so you get the best quality video.

What do they cost?

The price for this Workshop Video Lectures works out at only $9 per lecture - USD$90.00 for all 10 lectures. Compared with a live workshop you can watch the video over and over again. Reviews

"The video course is just as if I am in a class with Barry. Each video is practical, he shows me how to do an art technique. Besides the videos, each video has reading material so I don't have to transcribe what is said. And there are also assignments provided if I care to do them. I feel very fortunate to have found such good instructions; I am glad I bought the full 20 video series.".........Swami, USA, December 12, 2009
